Hi, today im going to share about my task that i've done for my Academic Communication 1 subject. I had found a very interesting topic that related to our daily life. So, this my own word that i can share for everyone. Although ants are frustrating when they get into
your home or when they bite or crawl on your food. We rarely see they alone.
They always in teen carry along together even just a bit of biscuit for their
long journey from kitchen to their home in the cracking wall. They are social
insect, which mean they live in large colonies or groups. They have their own
unique characteristic who distribute task to various castes.
The queen is one of the classes of the ants. They
have its differences between male workers and female ants through its large
size, wings, bulky thorax, and central placement within the colony. The queen
will noticeably bigger than the surrounding ants and be as a leader in the
colony. Generally she will be the mother of all others ant in the colony. Queen ants have one of the longest life-spans of any known
insect up to 30 years. Next, the queen
was born with wings. During the queen’s adult life, she will need to fly for
mate. However, there will be some male ants do have wings but they tend to be
slightly less noticeably because it will generally look more slender than a
queen. There will be some female ants do not need to mate to produce offspring
because they reproducing through cloning and all of those offspring will be
female. According to Vincent Dietman and Bert Holldobler (2005), ants queen generally monopolize reproduction,
eventhough female workers are able to produce males in orphaned colonies. This
proves that the queens job is to lay eggs. Besides, The General Information on
Ants Behaviour Articles (2009), stated that the queen lay all eggs in the
colony amounting to million in some species. However how does she start her
colony? All male ants and young winged queens leave their nest and fly high for
mate. The queens tear their wings off before forming a new colony. After
mating, the queen starts a new colony and raises her first worker offspring.
Furthermore,
There are females colony in ants gender. There are two kinds of females that
can mate. Female that can mate is called queen. They are the larger than the
other members of their colonies. This type of female is important species in
the ants colonies because they ensure the survival of their species. The
majority of queen ant’s egg grow up to become wingless, sterile female ants of
worker for the female species that cannot mate are called soldier. They become
soldier because they cannot lay eggs because their reproductive organs are not
well developed. According to Martha Adoms, “the non-mating female will raise
the babies, gather the food they will maintain and expand the nest or usually
will took care of the queens needs”. From the ant Ark article, stated that
nearly all the ants that people saw are female ants. Males ants or drones don’t
do any work in the colony. They only live only for a few months and their job
is to fertilize a princess. There are many types of ants that exist in this
world. One of that types is leafcutter ants in leaf cutter species. There are
only females colony that are exists from national geographic news, the author
Anna Kimmier proposed that there only females in this species and they thrive
without sex. They evolved to reproduce only when queen clone themselve.
Last but not least, drones are the only
male ants in colony. “They usually even smaller than the workers,” by www.antday.com&Yassen
Dobrev_antday. Male ants head and mandibles (ant’s jaws) are small. One can see
their genitals with the nacked eye. Their complex eyes are larger than these of
workers or females. Their behavior is inadequate. Drones hatch from
infertilized eggs, which can be laid in special cases by workers. From the ant
Ark article, stated that “they are born from un-fertilized eggs.” This happen
when queen is dead in other to keep the colony’s genes. In the nest drones do
not do any work at all. They even cannot feed their own, but workers feed them.
The only aim in a drone’s life is to fertilize a princess. After that they die.
Moreover, in the ant society, male ants serve only one purpose inseminate the
queen. The queen store sperm that she collects from the males in her abdomen
(spermatheca) which she uses to start the colony. She can continue for years,
even up to 30. Tiny, like other male ants, was born with a higher mortality
rate. This is even mentioned in book, “The Ants” written by Bert Holldobler,
Edward O. Wilson Swith and Shaw (1980), have pointed out that because of their
homozygous state, hymenopterous males always express lethal and subvital
alleles in their genome and hence inevitably suffer higher mortality than
females. This is also why the female to male ratio is higher.
